Turn Your Home Into a Warm and Inviting Retreat With Candles

The best way that I know of to turn your home into a warm and inviting retreat is by lighting candles.  I live in a small apartment, but I light about six scented candles around my home each evening.  They deliver a nice fragrance and create a warm atmosphere. 

 

There is nothing else that can create the same ambiance as far as I am concerned.  When I visit someone’s home and see glowing candles placed around the rooms, it puts me at ease and makes me feel welcome and comfortable.

 

When I visit a home and notice that there are none to be found, I get a sense of coldness.  Even the most beautifully decorated home is missing something without candles.  They are a very important part of a home’s décor.

 

If you are not a bona-fide candle lover like me, try them anyway.  I think that you will see what a big difference the glowing flames make in your home.  The flames flicker and emit a soft glow that provides a sense of coziness.

 

In my opinion, you can go out and buy house plants, new furniture, mirrors and pictures for your walls, and all kinds of home décor that will just not make the impact that a few candles will make.  Nothing else provides the softness and warmth that a glowing candle does. 

 

If you are afraid of lighting candles in your home because of the fire danger, just take a few precautions.  Always keep the wicks trimmed to ¼”, do not burn candles in a draft, do not leave burning candles unattended, and make sure they are not within the reach of small children or pets.

 

Make sure that all candles are extinguished before bedtime and do not burn them to the very bottom.  A few simple precautions should ease your mind as long as they are followed each time your candles are lit.

 

Candles are not just for women, either.  Many men enjoy the atmosphere that candles create.  The feeling is similar to sitting in front of a crackling fireplace or campfire.  There is just something about it that cannot really be explained.  A nice fire is one of those elements that create a special sense of serenity.

 

Don’t leave candles out of your home decorating.  They provide something that nothing else can.  Just take a walk around your home with no candles lit, then light a few and see what a difference it makes.  If you have never been a candle-person in the past, I think you will be surprised.

 

Pick up a few of your favorite scents and fill your home with the light and aroma.  You will never decorate without candles again!  If you are like me, your home will not feel complete without them.

The Scented Candles in Your Home is Harmful or No?

Smell? Your lust and passion? Not too sure about this question. There not too many things scent can signify other then the memories associated with them.Many people don’t use scented candles as they very chemical sensitive. Those synthetic smells are made of chemicals and I don’t know for sure but my guess is that if you check out the ingredients you may find that some of those chemicals that make the smells are very toxic for people.

But I love scented candles and my favorite are the Trapp candles, and I love the orange-vanilla ones.I have been buying for about 4 years. They usually cost about each because they burn for such a long time. It give me a very relaxed feeling when I light them. All of mine are very clean smelling like Vanilla or Verbena. I like the effect, but most of them have a chemically note to the scent that makes my nose crawl….

Also I know from experience that some candles turn walls black and that the most candles can cause serious health problems. The chief culprits are candles with wicks made with metal cores.

Not all candles – or even all scented candles – cause hazardous pollution. But since labels won’t tell which ones are safe, the candle experts give this advice.

Use only the natural vegetable waxes and beeswax. The natural vegetable waxes and beeswax are definitely better than parrafin. Parrafin candles are not good for you and for me. Most candles you can get at the grocery, drugstore etc are all made with parrafin and most have lead wicks.

If you really want the best for yourself and everyone in your home, spend a little more on soy or beeswax candles. They are cleaner burning. Paraffin, which is what most candles are made from, is petroleum based and much more polluting to your indoor environment. Also, many paraffin candles have metal (sometimes containing lead!) in the wick, which also gets into the air and poses a hazard. Soy and beeswax candles typically use natural cotton wicks. Look also for those with essential oil based fragrances.Patchouli, Sandalwood, Oakmoss, Bay, Cypress, Ginger, Black Pepper, Vanilla, Vetiver, and the citrus oils are oils that are the most strongly favored by people.

There are many sources on the web, and this is also what I do for a living! Candles by Aroma Naturals and Ergo may be the best I’ve ever found. Island Soap Company also has unbelievably great beeswax candles with terrific Hawaiian scents. Yankee Candle  – smells really good. The raspberry cream one is divine. As is the autumn leaves, but they’re quite wintery scents.

A lovely scent for the new season would be summer fresh – it’s green, smells so clean and almost watermelony without being clinical. The honeysuckle is great – smells EXACTLY like honeysuckle and it’s not as strong as the raspberry etc.

Scented candles are great! Don’t buy anything made in China as we just don’t know what is put in there! Buy brands from good candle makers, this way, you can be sure of quality from wax, wick and perfume.

Trim your wicks too. This will keep them from throwing smoke into the air! Good luck! I hope you have fun! Enjoy your candles!

Candle Making: How to Make Home Made Candles for Your Home Decor or for a Gift!

Candles bring an air of elegance and softness to any room in which they are used.  They serve many purposes from simple illumination to creating a centerpiece for a table.  Candles have been around for centuries.  No one knows just how long they have been around.  Egyptians were some of the first to use beeswax candles dating back to 3000 B.C.  There are artifacts that show that the first candles with wicks were created during the Roman period in history.  Our love for candles and the art of candle making is always developing. This is apparent in the styles of the candles that we use. 

So, you want to make candles? 

There are many types of candles to choose from when you consider candle making.  The key is to choose one type of candle to make and get that one down pat before starting another.  Start slow and build your craft.  This will give you a feel for working with wax and the equipment necessary for making candles.  With so many methods and types of candles that you can make it can get very confusing and frustrating. 

Start by working with the basic poured candle.  For this type of candle you will need the following; a dedicated pot that will be used only for melting your wax, a candy thermometer so that you can check the wax temperature, a wooden spoon or two to work with, wax, dye, and wick supplies which you can buy at your local craft store.  You may also want to purchase additives such as vybar or steric acid because these can increase the burn time of your candle. Paraffin is the most commonly used wax for candle making today and the best for a beginner to start with. 

Find containers that are functional, decorative, and safe.  Some of the best places to find containers are from thrift stores, yard sales, and your own kitchen.  Examples of containers are things such as old teacups, funny coffee mugs, good heavy glasses, and of course the Mason jar.

You have what you need, now what?

After gathering all the supplies and equipment in one place you are ready to get started. A word of caution here is to be sure that all your equipment is clean and dry.  Test your container prior to pouring hot wax into it to be sure that it will not break and can be used safely. Place a small drop of hot glue on the metal bottom of the wick then place it into the center of the container making sure to press down well. The wick can be kept in the center by wrapping a small portion of the wick around a pencil that lies on top of the container.  Make sure to secure the pencil before pouring the wax. 

Safety is important when working with heat and wax so keep a fire extinguisher handy.  And never throw water on a fire caused by wax!

Use a large pan that is approximately 1/3 full of water and bring the temperature of the water to 212° Fahrenheit. Place your pot with wax into the water. Keep the water at the same temperature while melting the wax.  Do not let the water boil away; add water as needed. Use the thermometer to test the temperature of the wax.  Follow the manufacturer’s suggested temperature for melting wax because it varies with different waxes.  Typically the best temperature for container wax is 170 – 175 degrees.  Never let the wax exceed 250 degrees! 

Once the wax has melted add the vybar or steric acid to the wax and mix well. The final step before pouring is adding color to your melted wax making sure to mix well.  You are now ready to pour your melted candle wax into your container.  Fill the container leaving approximately ¼ of headroom for the wick.  Once the candle wax has set you may then remove the pencil.  Trim the wick ¼ inch from the wax.

You have done it! You’ve made your first decorative candle and are now hooked.  You have so much to explore and lots of ideas.  As with all projects, have fun and be safe!
