Turn Your Home Into a Warm and Inviting Retreat With Candles

The best way that I know of to turn your home into a warm and inviting retreat is by lighting candles.  I live in a small apartment, but I light about six scented candles around my home each evening.  They deliver a nice fragrance and create a warm atmosphere.

There is nothing else that can create the same ambiance as far as I am concerned.  When I visit someone’s home and see glowing candles placed around the rooms, it puts me at ease and makes me feel welcome and comfortable.

When I visit a home and notice that there are none to be found, I get a sense of coldness.  Even the most beautifully decorated home is missing something without candles.  They are a very important part of a home’s décor.

If you are not a bona-fide candle lover like me, try them anyway.  I think that you will see what a big difference the glowing flames make in your home.  The flames flicker and emit a soft glow that provides a sense of coziness.

In my opinion, you can go out and buy house plants, new furniture, mirrors and pictures for your walls, and all kinds of home décor that will just not make the impact that a few candles will make.  Nothing else provides the softness and warmth that a glowing candle does.

If you are afraid of lighting candles in your home because of the fire danger, just take a few precautions.  Always keep the wicks trimmed to ¼”, do not burn candles in a draft, do not leave burning candles unattended, and make sure they are not within the reach of small children or pets.

Make sure that all candles are extinguished before bedtime and do not burn them to the very bottom.  A few simple precautions should ease your mind as long as they are followed each time your candles are lit.

Candles are not just for women, either.  Many men enjoy the atmosphere that candles create.  The feeling is similar to sitting in front of a crackling fireplace or campfire.  There is just something about it that cannot really be explained.  A nice fire is one of those elements that create a special sense of serenity.

Don’t leave candles out of your home decorating.  They provide something that nothing else can.  Just take a walk around your home with no candles lit, then light a few and see what a difference it makes.  If you have never been a candle-person in the past, I think you will be surprised.

Pick up a few of your favorite scents and fill your home with the light and aroma.  You will never decorate without candles again!  If you are like me, your home will not feel complete without them.

Making Deliciously Scented Candles

Making Deliciously Scented Candles

By adding scented candles to any room you can set the mood for people in the room.  Scented candles can stimulate, relax, and help to bring back memories of good times.  A very subtle scented candle is more attractive to many people. They can bring about a change in mood without bringing awareness to the reason for the change.

Using Scents in Your Home Made Candles

It is important that when adding scents to your candles that you add those scents specifically made for candles or pure essential oils.  Other types of scents have additives that can affect how your candle burns or how the scent smells once heated with paraffin.

It is recommended that when you first start making scented candles that you use only one scent.  By doing so you are able to experiment with the amount of oil that you will need to use to obtain the scent that you desire.

The usual ratio of wax to scent is one pound of wax to ½ -1 oz. of essential oil or candle scent.  If you want a stronger scented candle you will need to find a special wax that doesn’t sweat the oil.

Scents are added after the wax has been melted but before pouring the wax into your mold, container, or free form candle.  This allows the scent to mix evenly throughout your candle.  Remember to have a small amount of the scented wax to use for topping off your candle. Paraffin candles do tend to shrink some in the middle after hardening.

Experimenting to Find Your own Personal Scent

Don’t be afraid to experiment with creating scents.  When creating your own scents you will need a medicine dropper, small glass dish, toothpicks, cotton swabs, small brown bottle or bottles, different essential oils and some ground coffee.

Remember these are for candles so you don’t want to mix these oils with bases. Note that good essential oils can be a little expensive but they go a long way.  There are many places to buy essential oils such as your local craft store.

Once you have everything assembled, place paper under your working area; old newspapers work well for these projects. In the small glass dish place two drops of the main essential oil that you want to use.  Put a small drop of another essential oil that you have chosen to blend with the first oil into the glass dish. Mix both oils in the dish with a toothpick.  Walk away from the oils and smell the coffee to clear the mingling fragrances from nose.  Once you return to the dish, smell the oils from a distance, rather than placing your nose too close, to get a better idea of how the fragrance you have created smells. You can mix any combination of oils using this technique to determine your likes and dislikes.

Once you have achieved the fragrance you love, mix the oils in the same manner or ratio that you used when creating it. For example if you used 2 drops of bergamot and 1 drop of rose, you may mix 2 oz of bergamot with 1 oz of rose to create enough scent for your candle.

Remember that you only use ½ – 1 oz of oil to a pound of wax. Use caution and never use more than this amount unless you are using a special wax that allows more oil to be added.  This is because essential oils are flammable.

Once you have created your fragrance, store the oil in a small glass brown bottle in a cool area to protect the oils from the light and extreme temperatures.  Let the oil infuse for approximately three days prior to use.  Test the oil on a cotton swab to see how much, if any, the fragrance has changed since storing it.  Some change usually occurs.

Well you have done it! You have created a special fragrance that is of your own design to be used in your candles.  There will be no stopping you now.  Remember, as with any project, safety first!

Richly Scented Candles: A Brief History

Richly Scented Candles: A Brief History

The history of candles dates back in time as far as B.C. and, their values are an important part of religious rites that are followed by many religions then and now.

Buddhism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Judaism and many other religions use candles as part of their daily worship. So it is believed that the history certainly has been around before Christ.

The manufacturing of them has changed a great deal over the years. When candles were first observed to be in use, it is believed that the most common ingredient in use was tallow. However, that is not the case today in the manufacturing of candles. The most common ingredient used today is paraffin, however, is not the only element being used.

Before the invention of electricity in the 1700′s, the candle was the most commonly used form of light outside of the kerosene lamp. It played a tremendous roll in our history because all reading and sight had to be done through the lighting of candles, at night. Back in the 1700 and 1800 hundreds slaves, in America, who wanted to learn to read, often had to learn by candlelight at night because it was forbidden and kerosene set off to much light if they did not want to be discovered.

Chandeliers, in the past, were more commonly used to hold candles as opposed to today’s bulbs. The chandeliers which held the candles set off a more romantic or mellow effect as does the bright bulbs in use today. Many people are returning to this source for lighting effect and the along with the less electricity usage. They are discovering the cost effectiveness of candles is just a complimentary portion of the use of candles as a whole.

Candles were used in Northern Europe as a source of light, up until the early 1900 hundreds. They were one of the last cultures to conform to the use of electricity, as a source of light, then most of the world.

Back in the 1800′s it was thought that to produce a better-quality of candle would be to use the sperm of a whale. However, this was an expensive and rare ingredient to come across, although it did produce a superior candle.

Eventually paraffin was introduced as a much cheaper chemical form to use in the production of candles. So this made it a very popular ingredient in the making of them. The profession of a candle producer is called a Chandler. It might appear to many as an easy task, but it is not. You are dealing with hot wax over 700 degrees in Fahrenheit and this could be extremely dangerous at times.

Throughout history, there are very few, if any, parts of the world that have not used candles at one time or another. Events, engagements, etc. had to take place at night and the ability to see had to be accommodated. This is really what made candles play such a strong role in our history and this role cannot be ignored. Without the use of candles many things that were invented or discovered may not have never took place without the ability to see and that is what made candles of such an important use.

Soy vs. Paraffin Candles – The Great Debate

Soy vs. Paraffin Candles – The Great Debate

You may have heard stories recently about the benefits of soy wax, or about how paraffin wax is unhealthy or not good for you. In this article we will examine the myths and rumors and give the straight facts on both soy and paraffin wax candles and allow you to see what the truth and fuss is all about.

Before we start, it is important for you to know what the actual difference is between soy and paraffin waxes, and to see how each are produced. Let’s start with paraffin wax, the most common wax to create candles with today. If you purchase a candle that isn’t marked as soy, beeswax, or any other special blend of wax, chances are that you have purchased a candle that is made from a paraffin blend of wax.

Paraffin wax is a heavy hydrocarbon that comes from crude oil. Paraffin waxes are produced by refining or separating the waxes out of crude mineral oils. Obtained from the ground, crude oil is a compositionally varied product, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons. Another name for crude oil is fossil fuel. Crude oil is transported to refineries where it is refined into finished products by complex processes. One of the many products derived from refining is lubricating oil. It is from the lube oil refining process that petroleum waxes are derived. There are three general categories of petroleum wax that are obtained from lube oil refining. They include paraffin, microcrystalline and petrolatum. Paraffin waxes are derived from the light lubricating oil distillates. Paraffin waxes contain predominantly straight-chain hydrocarbons with an average chain length of 20 to 30 carbon atoms.

Soy wax, on the other hand is made from vegetable matter. Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed. The U.S. grows the vast majority of the world’s soybeans, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.

So now that you know how both soy and paraffin candles are made, let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of both types.

There are a lot of myths surrounding soy candles. Most of these are designed to sell soy candles better, and have very little truth in them. A great example is the great “no soot” myth. Sites that sell soy candles love to say that there is absolutely no soot produced with a soy candle. However, there is no truth and all hype to that claim. Absolutely, positively, and most importantly, scientifically, all organic compounds when burned will emit some carbon (soot) due to incomplete combustion. Sooting is primarily a factor of wick length and disturbance of the flame’s steady teardrop shape. There is no such thing as a soot-free candle. Further, while soy wax is all-natural and will not produce the thick black soot that you see on some paraffin containers, it does produce soot. An important fact to remember is that not all soot is black. Soot can be a “white soot” that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Soy wax will produce little black soot – unless the candle is improperly wicked, made, or burnt, but it may produce white soot.

But before you get scared of soot, let me tell you, that soot is in fact not harmful to you. Candle soot is composed primarily of elemental carbon particles, and is similar to the soot given off by kitchen toasters and cooking oils. These everyday household sources of soot are not considered a health concern, and are chemically different from the soot formed by the burning of diesel fuel, coal, gasoline, etc. So the myth of “soot free soy candles” is not only inaccurate, but simply an effort by some companies to scare the general public into buying their candles.

With that being said, there are some benefits to purchasing soy wax candles. While petroleum based paraffin wax is a limited resource, soy wax is a renewable resource that is limited only by how many soybeans we can grow. It is also beneficial to farmers who sell soybean crops, as well as lasting almost twice as long as paraffin wax.

However, soy wax is naturally a “soft” wax. While container candles, tealights, and small tarts may be made entirely of soy, it is extremely difficult to make good pillar candles and votives out of 100% pure soy wax. Additives are used to make them better, but in most cases, paraffin wax is still a much better solution for those types of candles. In my own company, Mystickal Incense & More, we use a blend of 50% soy wax and 50% paraffin wax for our free-standing candles.

In the end, both paraffin wax and soy wax are both good choices for candle wax. Neither is more “environmentally friendly” than the other, as there has never been scientific evidence that paraffin wax is harmful to your health in any way at all. It is a personal choice of which type you prefer to use, and both types hold scent and dye just as well. The only benefit that there is in all reality, is that container candles using soy wax do burn longer. And it does benefit the farmers of the Mid-western United States. However, most other claims regarding soy wax are false and/or misleading.

Old Crayons, New Candles

Old Crayons, New Candles

If you have children in your home, chances are you have an abundance of worn down crayons that don’t get used much anymore. Before throwing them out and buying new ones, consider using them to make candles. This can be a great way to turn them into something new and bright again. Most children will love the idea of creating candles with you and enjoy knowing their old crayons helped create them. Making candles out of crayons can also be a great gift giving idea.

Before you get started, discuss safety with your children. Since the crayons will have to be melted at a very high heat, they will not be able to participate in that portion of the candle making process. Assure them that there are many other aspects of the candle making that they can be a part of. To start, gather your supplies. In addition to the crayons, you will need a wax cartoon. This can be from milk, fabric softener, or orange juice. You will also need paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, and white packing string. If you don’t want to use your double boiler an old coffee can and a saucepan will work just as well.

Trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high. You will want to cut the string at least 8 inches long. You will later cut the wick to fit the holder. To ensure a wick that burns easier take three pieces and bread them together. Use smaller pieces of string to tie the ends together. The holders for your candles can be anything you desire as long as they are non-flammable. Pretty vases, glasses, and jars work nicely.

Melt about three pounds of paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. To help it melt faster, cut it into small chunks. The melting process with take about fifteen to twenty minutes. While the wax is melting, peel the papers off of the old crayons. You and your children can choose to separate the colors by lights and darks to have a mix that melds well or you can mix it all together and see what the color ends up being.

For best results, only add the crayons to the wax after it has completely melted. After the crayons and wax have both melted together, immediately remove the mixture from the stove and pour into your candle holders. If you would like to make scented candles try adding a splash of cinnamon or vanilla to your hot wax mixture.

It is important that the candles by left alone to completely harden. Make sure you have an area this can be done without disruption. It is also important to make sure small children can’t reach them, as out of curiosity they may want to check on their candles. The wax will stay hot for several hours and can scold the skin.

Making candles out of old crayons is a great way to spend the afternoon creating a neat project with your children. This process can also be done at schools and childcare centers with old crayons as presents for parents. Simply allow each child to decorate the outside of their candle holder while adults complete the rest of the process.

Precautions To Be Taken While Burning Candles

Precautions To Be Taken While Burning Candles

As the love of candles is increases so is the risk associated with it. Statistics states that candles are becoming the growing fire cause. Just because of carelessness while handling candles is leading to injury and even death of innumerous people every year. Candles are bringing fire inside the homes of people.

Therefore, it is very important to take extra precautions when handling burning candles. Not burning candles is not a precaution, although it might seem perfect but not practical. The best thing to do is to put the candle in a heat resistance environment. You need to be extra careful while handling tea lights and night lights because they prone to get very hot, hot enough to heat and melt plastic. Usually television is considered as the best candle stand. But the truth is that the material out of which television is made is not fire resistance. Therefore, it is important to have a proper candle holder. The candle holder must be designed such that it doesn’t fall over and must be stable. It should hold the candle upright firmly.

Another point which people mostly miss out and which is the major reason of fire due to candles is presence of curtains or loose fabric of a furniture or clothing. Curtains and loose fabric fly around the place and have a high probability of catching fire. Also the candle shouldn’t be in a reachable distance so that if a person leans over he may tip the candle over. This could be dangerous as it could put the clothes or hair on fire. A very important point is to keep the burning candle out of the reach of pets and children. They could tip the candle over while playing.

It is a good idea to never put a burning candle under shelves. That is a very easy place to forget. Because of the high amount of heat generated it is very easy for the surface above it to catch fire. Putting the burning candle under any other surface is also not recommended. There should be a distance of at least one meter or three feet between the burning candle and the surface above it. If not a greater damage, close by surface can get deposited by candle smoke. Two burning candles should also be kept at apart at a distance of at least ten centimeters of four inches.

Scented and votive candles change their state to liquid in order to release the fragrance. Therefore, these scented and votive candles must be placed in a metal or glass holder cup so the melted liquid is captured in the cup. Also, care must be taken that nothing should fall into the hot wax such as a match stick. The candles shouldn’t be moved while they are burning. Before being moved the candles must be extinguished as there can be chance of the burning candle being dropped. Instead of blowing the candle out a spoon can be used to put the flame off. Because blowing can send hot wax and sparks flying, which can result in a fire.

Burning candles should never be left unattended. They should be extinguished before the room is left. Never sleep while the candles are still burning. And oil burner or burning candle should never be left in a kid’s bedroom. Double check candles whether they are extinguished or not. Sometimes the candle which have been put out can be smoldering which can also start a fire. So the candles should be put off completely.

Candles can make an occasion extra special but if proper care isn’t taken they can make the special event into a disaster.visit electric oil burner | outdoor towel warmer & Your Shopping Maps
